Hot Toddy for (Grown-up) Colds

It seems I have caught one miserable cold after another this winter. Some have been worse than others, so at times I can plug right along and ignore the symptoms, but other times I just need to stay in my pajamas and rest all day. Right now, I am getting over yet another one - ugh! - and even had to cancel company we had invited over for dinner last night.

This a job for a hot toddy.

Why a hot toddy?
  • It is soothing to a sore throat.
  • It clears my sinuses.
  • It warms me up from the inside out when I have chills.
  • It is very relaxing, and I am usually ready to fall into bed after drinking one.
Sometimes I think a hot toddy before bed may be better than Nyquil - and that's hard to beat. It sure tastes better. Plus, it is so easy to make, even a sick person can do it!

All you need are:
  • brandy or rum (I prefer brandy)
  • lemon
  • honey
  • water
First, start a kettle of water on the stove, and then for each hot toddy, combine in a mug or cup: 1 shot of brandy, juice from 1/4 lemon, and 1 tablespoon honey.

As soon as the water boils, pour over the top of your brandy mixture and stir until honey dissolves.

Garnish with a slice of lemon, and drink immediately while still hot!

I prefer a pretty teacup when I think about it...

What is your favorite cold remedy?

  1. Jack Daniels or Jack Daniels with Honey for me. Makes me sweat out the nasties, makes my throat feel better and I am almost human. I can't take Nyquil, Dayquil or any of that stuff that has pseudo ephedrine in it so this is the answer.

    Love the tea set!!
